Who we are

GOCF who we are:

WhoWeAre

GODS OWN CHILDREN FOUNDATION is a secular, nongovernmental, nonprofit organisation which was established to assist Disadvantaged Children and their families in the Jaffna Peninsula. GODS OWN CHILDREN FOUNDATION is a non political entity and provides equal opportunity and access to education to all Disadvantaged Children who seek our services, and does not discriminate on the basis of Religion, Caste, Creed, Gender or any other factor.

Gods Own Children Foundation is a Grassroots Non Profit Organisation  , ( Registered under Voluntary Social Service Organisations  ( Voluntary and Supervision) Act, No 31 of 1980, as amended by Act , No 8 of 1998 of Sri Lanka ) has been , during the last decade ,supporting  & working  with , and speaking for , the  most Disadvantaged & Vulnerable Children and Youth &  their families in the Jaffna Peninsula , in North Sri Lanka. We have been directly involved in providing support services to Children, Youth & their families who have been affected by the war and the tsunami.

Even before the tsunami hit Sri Lanka’s Northern and Eastern coasts in December 2004, most of the  people in the war torn  North East, were living below the poverty line . A large percentage of the people eked out a meagre living.

In a few terrifying minutes, the tsunami took its toll, killing thousands of people and changing the lives of many more by wiping out their livelihoods. Hundreds of thousands of people were at risk of plunging into poverty. In its wake, the tsunami left desolate evidence of how vulnerable  poor people in the North East were are in the face of shocks and natural disasters.

Most of the poor people of the Jaffna Peninsula, live in rural areas. The 20-year civil conflict in the north and east of the country had a major impact on poverty, leading to the displacement of about 800,000 people from their homes and sources of livelihood. Thousands of children lost one or both parents, and there was an increase in the number of households headed by women, which are more likely to be exposed to economic hardship.

More than half of the rural poor people of Jaffna are small farmers.  Agricultural  growth in the Jaffna Peninsula has been sluggish. A significant lack of infrastructure such as roads, electricity, and irrigation and communication facilities limits peoples opportunities to earn income through off-farm activities. Malnutrition among children is common. In some areas, seven out of ten people have no access to electricity, and almost half of the population does not have access to safe drinking water. Agriculture is the major employer in rural Jaffna, and an important stimulus for other sectors of the economy. Small-scale farmers produce most of the agricultural output, but their production systems are hampered by neglect, poor economies of scale, low investment levels resulting from poor financial services, and inappropriate or limited technology. Other factors that affect poor farmer’s livelihoods include fragmented landholding, post-harvest losses , inconsistent produce pricing and trade policies, and market constraints.

GOCF CURRENTLY PROVIDES THE FOLLOWING SEVICES:

*      CONDUCTS SPECIAL NEEDS SCHOOLS FOR DISADVANTAGED CHILDREN

GOCF accommodates  children who don’t attend the normal mainstream schools. These children are so backward that they cannot , and will not fit into the mainstream schools. A child of 9 years who should be in grade 5 does not have the knowledge to be in that class, and can fit in only in grade 2. We accommodate all such children and address their individual needs , in addition to the needs of intellectually and physically disabled children. Currently, approximately 400 special needs children benefit from the schools established in Ariyalai ,Siththankerny , Point - Pedro ,Araly & Moolai.

*      OPERATE EMPLOYMENT TRAINING CENTRES FOR DISADVANTAGED YOUTH

Currently ,GOCF operates  Sewing Training Centres in Manipay ,Nallur , Point Pedro ,Nedunkulam & Araly ,benefiting more than 200 adult females todate.GOC intends to expand the employment training centres to accommodate a wider section of the disadvantaged youth of the Jaffna Peninsula. We have ambitious plans of adding on computer & electronic training programmes , training programmes in  poultry farming & animal husbandry , and many other employment oriented skills training programmes , in order to ensure that our disadvantaged youth learn vital skills to obtain income generating opportunities , and lead an independent life. These ventures have been put on cold storage , awaiting the availability of funds.

*      ACTIVELY ENGAGE IN A PROJECT TO BRING BACK THE “SCHOOL DROP OUTS“ BACK TO THE SCHOOL SYSTEM

GOCF also accommodates during the weekends, slow learners who are very backward in class, in the mainstream schools. This is mainly due to malnutrition, lack of facilities at home for study, and lack of encouragement and motivation from home. Due to this project, there has been a significant improvement in the performance  of the children. Earlier , a child who should be in grade 4 , started off his education in grade 1 , and now , after 4 years of Special Education in GOC , he is only one grade behind. Teachers in the mainstream schools  have also reported excellent progress & performance in the children who were identified as "Slow Learners" , and were sent to the GOC schools , for "Catch Up" education.

In addition to the education service we provide, GOCF also provides Milk & a Mid - Day Nutrition Meal / Lunch. This has ensured that the malnourished children are fed properly , and their nutrition levels have improved , resulting in better concentration in their studies and improved performance levels.

*      SUPPORT THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION IN IDENTIFYING NEEDS OF DISADVANTAGED CHILDREN , AND FULFILLING THEIR NEEDS

GOCF supports disadvantaged children who do not have access to its regular special needs schools ,by liaising with officials from the Zonal Departments of Education ,who help GOC identify needs of the poor disadvantaged children in the mainstream schools. As a result ,GOC has provided needy children with reading glasses/spectacles, wheel chairs . School supplies .clothes, shoes, medicines etc.....

*      CONDUCT CO - CURRICULAR EVENTS FOR THE NEGLECTED DISADVANTAGED CHILDREN, ENABLING THEM TO ENHANCE THEIR INHERENT TALENTS
